The four-day National Workshop on developing the roadmap for establishing the National Maritime Information Sharing Centre (NIMSC) concluded today in the interim capital, Aden. The workshop was organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under the Crisis Response Project in the Red Sea and Western Indian Ocean (CRP-RedWIO), funded by the European Union.
The workshop brought together 20 participants representing various ministries, government authorities, security and military institutions, and other relevant stakeholders. It aimed to discuss the mechanisms for establishing and operating the Centre, as well as to develop a national roadmap aligned with regional and international best practices.
Dr. Faheem Saif, Chief Executive Officer of the General Authority for Maritime Affairs, emphasized that the workshop marks an important step toward building an advanced national maritime information-sharing system and strengthening coordination and integration among all maritime stakeholders, thereby enhancing maritime security, safety, and the protection of Yemen’s national interests.
He noted that the workshop served as a key platform for enhancing coordination and cooperation among national institutions responsible for safeguarding maritime navigation, combating illicit maritime activities, supporting search and rescue operations, and protecting the marine environment. He also expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the International Maritime Organization and its partners in supporting Yemen, strengthening maritime security, and building national capacities.
Dr. Saif explained that the workshop’s key outcomes include the establishment and development of the National Maritime Information Sharing Centre and the formation of the National Maritime Security Committee as the overarching body for coordinating maritime security policies. He reaffirmed the commitment to continued cooperation with national and international partners to translate these outcomes into practical, implementable projects and programs.
